Dec. 13, 10 -

Kauffman and Associates, Inc. (KAI) has won a 2010 Gold Ava Award for its “Bringing Back Smiles” video created for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The video, which won in the nonprofit category, profiles the quality work of Alaska’s dental therapists who offer a successful community-led solution to filling America’s oral health gap.

The Ava Award recognizes outstanding work by creative professionals involved in the concept, writing, direction, shooting, and editing of audiovisual materials and programs. Entries include film, analog, and digital productions viewed in a wide variety of mediums – from movie screens to televisions to computers.

The Ava Award is administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals (AMCP). More than 1,700 entries were received in 2010. Approximately 12 percent were Gold Winners, which is presented to those entries judged to exceed the high standards of the industry norm. As announced in November, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation is supporting community-led efforts in five states (Kansas, New Mexico, Ohio, Vermont and Washington) to increase oral health care access by adding dental therapists to the dental team, which is part of a larger effort to build awareness of oral health issues and bring quality dental care to every community.

Alaska is currently the only state with an active dental therapist program in the United States, where more than 49 million children and adults live in areas without enough dentists. The first major independent evaluation of the Alaska program, conducted by RTI International, found that therapists provide safe, competent, and appropriate care.
